Time for Change

We still refuse to see the need for a change in how we understand and treat addiction to drugs and alcohol. As long as our society and the treatment industry continues to think that addiction is about something other than the addict or alcoholic, more and more will continue to die on a daily basis. We still do not fully accept the addict and alcoholic's responsibility in their addiction.

We have tried blaming a variety of people, places and things and the situation has not gotten better but only steadily worse. You could say that the understanding that we currently have about addiction and the treatment modalities used with addicts and alcoholics is actually aiding in their destruction. Our system is actually part of the problem, not the solution.

Addiction is about what a particular substance does for the addict or alcoholic. Addiction to drugs and alcohol helps the addict and alcohol feel good and in the process avoid reality. Addiction to drugs and alcohol suppresses and supports the addict and alcoholic's negative self image of not being good enough and the emotional consequences of poor self esteem.

The drug, like the drug dealer, physician, pharmaceutical companies, are not the problem. The drugs are not addictive. The addiction gets created by what the drug does to relieve the emotional pain caused by the addict or alcoholic's way of thinking, especially about themselves. Help the addict or alcoholic create a new, healthier self image and the addiction will vanish."
