It appears to be an accepted belief that drug and alcohol addiction has a physical cause. It appears to be an accepted belief that drug and alcohol addiction is a disease primarily of the brain.
How are these beliefs working out for us in this country? How are these beliefs helping us to find solutions for the rising deaths from overdoes and high relapse rates for individuals admitted to treatment centers?
It appears that what we believe about addiction does not convert into any type of viable, effective treatment strategy. It also appears that we do not truly understand what drug and alcohol addiction is all about.
The problem that we have is one of ignorance and ego. We have to stop pretending that we know when we do not and let go of our desire to look good. Too many people need help for us to continue perpetuate a lie.
