We desperately need a new and more adequate way of understanding drug and alcohol addiction. We also need to admit that what we have been during to be of service to addicts and alcoholics has not and does not work. We also need to stop blaming the addict and alcoholic for not trying hard enough or not wanting to be clean and sober.
It is my belief that those suffering from substance abuse and addiction would prefer to have a better and happier existence. How can we expect these individuals to recover if we continue to point them in the wrong direction and to add to the problem, blame them for not recovering. The real issue is not with the addict or alcoholic, it is with how we conceive and perceive of the problem of addiction.
