It is interesting that the conversation about the importance of self esteem with respect to the understanding and treatment of substance abuse or addiction gets ignored or openly criticized. At best poor self esteem is perceived of as a byproduct of drug and alcohol addiction but definitely not the cause of substance abuse. To acknowledge that poor self esteem is the primary cause of drug and alcohol addiction would necessitate that we take a look at ourselves inside. For many looking at what they think and how they feel about themselves is something to definitely be avoided.
